Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Mona

This week, we spotlight our musically talented 12th grader Mona, who has been part of the ISR community since the fourth grade.

Mona’s great passion is music, and she is an outstanding pianist. In the past, Mona has won many prestigious music competitions and most recently won the MozArte international piano competition in Aachen, Germany, where she was interviewed by the Lokalzeit in Achen together with her sister. Her music teacher, Ms. Gander, says about her, “Mona is a very talented musician and one of the most motivated students I have ever taught. She is boundless and passionate about music”.

Mona also regularly participates in ISR’s internal concerts and always enchants her audience. In the academic field, she is known for her outstanding performance and determination: she knows exactly how to motivate herself! Her commitment is very broad and recently, during the Corona lockdown, she initiated a virtual sports group with some classmates to keep fit together. She is also involved in several CAS projects supporting younger ISR students as a learning mentor, giving piano lessons and teaching Japanese to non-native speakers through a SLOⓇ activity.

Mona also took part in a “Clean Up Action” in Düsseldorf where she and many others helped to beautify our city. Her teacher, Ms. Herda, added, “I have been teaching Mona since 10th grade and have had the honour of accompanying her school career for three years. It is great to see how Mona has developed academically and also in character over the last few years. She is currently attending my IB German class and is preparing for her oral exam, where she has to give a presentation on a book extract. Mona is a very determined student whom I can always rely on when I have tricky questions about the protagonists. She is very motivating and enriches my class”.

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Pia

This week, we spotlight our fourth grader Pia, who joined ISR in grade 1. Pia is a talented young girl with a strong personality. Because of that, even teachers from middle and upper school know her very well! Mr. Urban met Pia as he covered a class from her and from that time, Pia has remained in his memory: “Pia is very confident and if you talk to her, sometimes you get the feeling of talking with a young adult. I enjoy the times we meet in the hallway, and she tells me about her weekend and holiday stories. She has a very lively personality, and I am sure she will go her own special way.”

Pia loves interacting with others and if she finds something interesting during class, she is passionate and enjoys sharing it with her classmates. She is very dedicated to the things she cares about and is always willing to help those struggling with tasks or questions. Her passion includes sports and she is an outstanding athlete. Jonna Schierl, Athletics Coordinator at ISR, says about Pia “last year, we did a small plank challenge in PE, and Pia was able to hold it far longer than everyone else. Her performance was really impressive, and she has a lot of potential.” Everyone who gets to know Pia will directly see the importance of sports in her life. She is a loyal friend and brightens the day of anyone she comes into contact with.

Our Music Teacher, Ms. Bucher, describes her finally with very appropriate words “The “P” in Pia stands for Personality! She has a great sense of humour and is very witty.”

Spotlight On Our Student Derin

This week, we spotlight our eleventh Grader Derin, who joined ISR in April, leaving behind his hometown Istanbul. Although Derin has only recently joined the ISR community, he has already impressed his teachers and classmates. He is a very friendly and open-minded student, who is particularly interested in discussion topics such as politics, current affairs and history. Also, he has volunteered as an election worker and will support the upcoming local elections in Düsseldorf.

His History teacher, Mr. Rademaker, confirms his interest in all historical subjects and adds “In History, Derin has impressed his teachers with his extensive knowledge of and passion for the subject. In addition, Derin is planning a fascinating topic for his Extended Essay and has already made extensive progress on his investigation.”

Derin is also very talented in reading; in Istanbul, he won on three occasions the German Reading Competition. Reading is his passion and that’s the reason why he also supports some second Graders during their preparations for reading competition. He is really committed to school life and recently joined the MUN Executive Team to help planning internal debates and finding virtual conferences to participate in. Derin also shines with his friendly and helpful personality. It is important for him to give something back and he is socially very committed. His CAS teacher, Mr. Urban, says about him, “Derin is a wonderful addition to our ISR Community. He is already very engaged in CAS and as a project, he will support the St. Augustinus “Memory Center” close at ISR. There he will use music, he plays Turkish guitar, to bring a smile to the faces of elderly people.”

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Kwaku

This week, we spotlight our second-grader Kwaku who joined ISR in Kindergarten. His former teacher, Ms. Stenning-Smith, describes Kwaku as a lovely and happy student. “Kwaku was a delight to have in my First Grade class last year. All of those who know him I am sure will agree that he has an incredibly friendly and welcoming face. One of his most favourite things to do was to make us laugh: he ensured each and every day that we had a good time whilst we were learning. His personality could be defined as bubbly and bright, there is never a dull moment when Kwaku is around.

“On top that all of he has a spectacular passion for learning. Kwaku deserves this week’s student spotlight as he is truly an all-rounded super star. He is truly missed in the First Grade corridor.”

Also his sports teacher, Mr. Johnstone, finds his personality fascinating and says about him “Kwaku is a wonderful student, and has an infectious positive personality. He is energetic, and simply loves to play sports. He is popular and well liked among his fellow classmates, and shows a kindness and helpfulness towards others, an excellent example of a great ISR student!”

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Ayssan

This week, we spotlight our committed seven grader student Ayssan, who joined ISR in Kindergarten.Ayssan is a multi-talented student and a very popular member of our school community. In the past years, Ayssan has grown beyond herself and has developed  a conscientious, purposeful and lovable personality.

Her friendly nature is not only appreciated by her fellow students, but also by her teachers. Ayssan’s versatile talents are admirable and she especially shines  in the sporting and musical field.Ayssan has been taking piano lessons at the in-house music school Musicbox Oxana for over five years and her talent speaks for itself. She participated twice in the music competition “Jugend Musiziert” and won first place in both competitions!

In addition to her musical talent, she also shows great enthusiasm for the sports of tennis and basketball. Her couch Ms. Schierl says about her, “There are only a few students that represent ISR in different sports – Ayssan is one of them.” Ms. Schierl continues, “She is part of our Tennis Team and the Junior Girls Basketball Team. Ayssan is a real team player. For example, when the girls’ tennis team was lacking one player, she was willing to start in the older age group even though she had to face a very strong opponent. During the match she never lost her smile and even won some points. I was so very proud of her. It was also a pleasure to coach Ayssan in our basketball training sessions as she is very eager to learn and to improve her performance: throughout the year she made huge progress. Well done!”

We are very happy that Ayssan belongs to our ISR community and look forward to follow her successes in future.

Spotlight On Our Student Zoey

This week, we spotlight our lovely Kindergarten student, Zoey. Zoey is a funny, brave and kind young girl who at the beginning of her time at ISR was quite shy. However, she quickly become confident and is eager to help the other children and teachers. Zoey is known for the smile on her face and is always ready for her next adventure together with her friends!

Her friends really appreciate her helpful and sociable nature. She is very caring and supports others in every respect. Her Kindergarten teacher Ms. Kim says about her, “I enjoy being silly with her and sharing a laugh or two whenever we get the chance. She likes to help and did a beautiful job in supporting her younger brother during his first days at ISR. She is a wonderful big sister which is not a surprise if you have met her other siblings. We are happy to have Zoey and her family as part of the ISR community”.

Spotlight On Our Student Kiara

This week, we spotlight our lovely kindergarten student Kiara. Kiara is a bright, friendly flower who loves to share a smile and a laugh. She has worked very hard this school year and also did an amazing job working virtually. She is always focused and enjoyed her Zoom sessions to catch up with her friends and her teachers. She distinguishes herself through her communicative manner and her classmates enjoy spending time with her.

Her teacher Ms. Rebecca says about her, “Well done, Kiara! We love having her in KG1M. She has a very open and friendly character and needless to say that she is here to help peers and teachers. She has a great sense of humor and is able to brighten up any sad mood.”

Spotlight On Our Student Natsuki

This week, we spotlight our sixth-grader Natsuki who moved from Japan to Germany last year. Natsuki worked hard in class to catch up and has done an amazing job. Her English teachers Ms. Freise says about her, “She has made immense improvements in English since she came to Germany. I am proud of this young smart lady!”

Natsuki really gets along with her classmates and enjoys her time at ISR. Natsuki’s passion is playing volleyball. Ms. Schierl, the Athletics Coordinator at ISR, adds, “Natsuki played volleyball as part of her SLO^Ⓡ activity. Due to her good performance she was selected to be part of the Volleyball team that competed in Dormagen. It was the first match for the girls. Natsuki was motivated, a good team player, and able to put my advice into practice. Well done!”

Natsuki is an engaged student who exactly knows what she wants and works hard for it. Ms. Freise found perfect words to end this spotlight”I have really enjoyed teaching her and she is a true asset to our school and our school motto We enable great minds and strong characters!”

Spotlight On Our Student Leyra

This week, we spotlight our Kindergarten student Leyra who joined ISR last year and has never lived in Germany before. Last school year she worked hard and really has come out of her shell! She gets along with her classmates perfectly and is an open-minded young lady. She has a versatile character and her friends especially appreciate her friendliness and helpfulness.

Leyra is a good friend and loves spending time with her mates. During classes, she shows her creative side and always comes up with new ideas. Her Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Ramirez, says about her, “Leyra is a positive role model and happily plays with all her classmates. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to get to know her and her family. She is so special!”

Spotlight On Our Student Darya

This week, we spotlight our humble 11^th grade student Darya, who joined ISR in grade 9. Darya is a very polite, self-reflected, and mature student who always gives her best academically and supports her friends. She never has a bad day in school and her performance is always top-notch.

She also is a brilliant supportive Big Sister to a student in grade 3, as part of her CAS project. Darya is ambitious, and she is also involved in the SLO^® Discipline Department and supports the organization of several student events such as “Random Acts of Kindness Week” and the “Lock In”.

Darya is a bright, hardworking individual who feels strongly about helping others. She spends her time volunteering at a local elderly home, of which the residents are really grateful for. Darya is also involved in the collection of donations for children who suffered severe burns in Iran.

Beyond her fantastic social and academic skills, Darya is passionate about music and gives private fun guitar lessons to her classmates in her spare time. She is also a tennis player. Her teacher Mr. Krönke says this about her “Darya is humble and polite while at the same time being highly ambitious. She takes criticism to heart and tries to improve wherever she can. She is a good friend to her classmates and I am sure that a bright future awaits her”.
