MUN 2016 in New York

During the Easter vacation, nine ISR students participated in the Model United Nations Conference in New York, USA in the United Nations Building.

Not only was it academically rewarding with two and a half days of debates, but they were fortunate to spend the rest of the time enjoying the sights of New York. From the Empire State Building to the Museum of Modern Art, the Natural History museum to the M&M store, the 9/11 Memorial site to an NBA Basketball game, the students loved the trip and wish to return as soon as possible.

ISR MUN Executive Team

Additionally, ISR has its own MUN Executive Team, which successfully organizes internal MUN simulations. Our students thereby act as delegates for countries, which they then represent in a committee. Together they debate about current or past international issues and at the end of the conference, a solution is found. In the process, the delegates learn to lead discussion rounds, conduct research, and debate.

ISR is proud to have its own Model United Nations Executive Team, a student-led organization responsible for developing the school’s MUN program and organizing our internal conference, MUN on the Rhine.

The Executive Team is led by a Secretary-General and Conference Manager, who oversee the planning and delivery of the conference. They are supported by six specialized departments:

• Administration
• Finance and Scouting
• Research
• Junior MUN
• Logistics
• Marketing and Communications

Each department is led by a student Department Head and supported by team members from Grades 8-12. Together, they select committees and topics, prepare research materials, manage registrations and finances, organize rooms and resources, communicate with participants, and ensure that the conference runs smoothly. This structure gives students genuine responsibility and valuable experience in leadership, teamwork, project management, and event organization.

During MUN on the Rhine, students take on the roles of delegates representing different countries in United Nations committees. They research their assigned country’s policies and perspectives before debating current or historical international issues. Delegates must communicate their positions clearly, listen to opposing viewpoints, negotiate with others, and work collaboratively to draft formal resolutions.

Through their involvement in the MUN Executive Team and MUN conferences, students develop important skills in:

• Public speaking and formal debate
• Research and critical thinking
• Diplomacy and negotiation
• Leadership and teamwork
• Academic writing and resolution drafting
• Event planning and organization
• Global awareness and intercultural understanding

The Junior MUN department also helps introduce younger students to the principles and procedures of Model United Nations through a weekly SEA session. This creates a supportive pathway through which students can build their confidence, develop their debating skills, and eventually take on greater leadership responsibilities within the program.

By placing students at the heart of both the conference and its organization, the ISR MUN Executive Team provides far more than a simulation of the United Nations. It gives students the opportunity to become informed, confident, and responsible global citizens.
