Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Tom

This week, we spotlight our sports-loving eleventh grader Tom, who has been part of the ISR community since last year. Tom moved to ISR from a German school and had to get used to a completely different school system in Grade 10. Last year he showed a lot of ambition and worked impressively through the change of school. His academic coordinator, Ms. McGee, still has fond memories of Tom’s start of school and confirms that he invested a lot of time, especially in the early months, to make the change of school a success.

As part of the CAS Big Brother/Big Sister project, Tom regularly spends time with a second grader and provides support. They meet during breaks and Tom takes on the role of Big Brother. Tom takes this role very seriously and it is important to him that he is a role model for his little brother. He is always available to answer his questions and give him advice. His CAS teacher, Mr. Urban, adds “with Tom, you immediately notice that it comes from the heart. Tom is very reliable and conscientious and an ideal role model for his little brother. The two laugh a lot and enjoy the time together.”

Another matter close to Tom’s heart is sport, as it is one of his greatest passions and he has been an active member of the sports club PSV, for many years. In order to combine his passion with school, he is currently taking the first IB sports course (Exercise and Health Service) at ISR. He also runs a SLOⓇ soccer activity for first and second graders together with our sports teacher, Mr. Johnson. Tom not only supports Mr. Johnson, but also brings his own ideas to the activity. He has great fun motivating the Primary School children and teaching them new techniques. Since Tom became part of the ISR community, he has been very involved and engaged from the beginning. He is appreciated by his classmates and is incredibly polite and reliable. Tom shows great fighting spirit and is an example of how you can achieve just about anything with a strong will and ambition.

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Mulan

This week, we spotlight our creative third-grade student Mulan, who joined ISR in Grade 1.
Mulan is a very helpful student who always stands by her classmates. Her cheerful character enriches everyone around her and she is an enthusiastic young lady. Mulan loves cats as Supervisor Mr. Jeff reveals, “Mulan is a well-mannered student. She always tells us new stories about cats and has won our supervisor’s hearts with her sweet nature.”

Her teacher, Ms. Morris, says about her “Mulan is a shining star at ISR! She is incredibly caring and compassionate her classmates, and she is always there to help anyone in need. Mulan is a fantastic student both in and out of the classroom and a joy to see every day!” Also, her teacher, Ms. Ewing, would like to say a few words, “She is a very kind-hearted individual who demonstrates respect and responsibility every day. She enjoys learning and is also very creative, especially when it comes to art!”

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Bente

This week, we spotlight our bright smiling Fourth Grader Bente, who joined ISR in Kindergarten.
Bente is an enthusiastic student, who enjoys school life and likes learning new things. She is very social and takes care of others and supports her friends in every way. She has a friendly and happy character and is a bright young girl. Ms. Morris, her academic coordinator, is a big fan of her and describes her with the following “Bente is a shining star in our Primary School. She is incredibly helpful and empathetic, and she always has a smile on her face and a funny story to share. Bente is the first to volunteer to help anyone in need – even her teachers. We love having Bente at ISR!”.

She is always in a good mood and known for her bright smile. Some teachers have known her since Kindergarten and have witnessed her wonderful development. Her sports teacher, Ms. Racheva describes her as “an exemplary student who is very enthusiastic and polite. Bente has an incredible smile on all the time.”

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Maria

This week, we spotlight our Grade 5 ray of sunshine, Maria, who joined ISR in kindergarten! Maria is a hardworking and helpful student with a delightful personality. She always has an open ear for her classmates and is a team player who supports her friends in every way. She is a very conscientious student and enjoys reading. Maria convinces not only with her academic achievements but also with her great character traits.

Her academic coordinator, Ms. Brand, describes Maria with the words, “Maria is an engaging student who is kind and thoughtful. She always offers help to her classmates and teachers alike. Maria is an excellent role model and always works hard. She really enjoys Computing and participated in the Minecraft SLO last year. She showed great mastery and skills! Well done to Maria”. Her sports teacher, Ms. Racheva, has known Maria since Kindergarten and has been able to follow her wonderful development. She is very proud that Maria has developed into such a dedicated and enthusiastic student. Also, Mr. Mo, Supervisor at ISR, has also known Maria for several years and is absolutely thrilled with her personality. “Maria is a wonderful student and our little angel. Maria radiates so much positivity and warmth that it is impossible to be not a huge fan of her.”

This week, we spotlight our 8th Grader Lukas, who joined ISR in Kindergarten and since then has always been a valuable member of our ISR community. Luke is characterized by his determination and politeness. He is much liked by his classmates and is always available to help and advise them. He is artistically very talented:  “Lukas is a great artist! He has interesting ideas that he portrays successfully in his artwork. Mostly he enjoys working with imagery of fantasy which I am sure is dominant in his sketchbook,” according to his Art teacher. He also shows great talent in the musical field. His music teacher, Mrs. Gander, says about him “Lukas did a great job learning the saxophone last year – he was very motivated while we were stuck at home learning virtually and was quick to play new repertoire.” Lukas is very successful in the academic field and his teachers describe him as very determined, focused, and hard-working. His French teacher, Ms. Perera adds. “I teach him in French, and he is one of the best student, not only academically but also as a very handsome classmate.” Lukas always gives his best and is ambitious, professional and polite. He has a wonderful character with such a promising personality.

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Mona

This week, we spotlight our musically talented 12th grader Mona, who has been part of the ISR community since the fourth grade.

Mona’s great passion is music, and she is an outstanding pianist. In the past, Mona has won many prestigious music competitions and most recently won the MozArte international piano competition in Aachen, Germany, where she was interviewed by the Lokalzeit in Achen together with her sister. Her music teacher, Ms. Gander, says about her, “Mona is a very talented musician and one of the most motivated students I have ever taught. She is boundless and passionate about music”.

Mona also regularly participates in ISR’s internal concerts and always enchants her audience. In the academic field, she is known for her outstanding performance and determination: she knows exactly how to motivate herself! Her commitment is very broad and recently, during the Corona lockdown, she initiated a virtual sports group with some classmates to keep fit together. She is also involved in several CAS projects supporting younger ISR students as a learning mentor, giving piano lessons and teaching Japanese to non-native speakers through a SLOⓇ activity.

Mona also took part in a “Clean Up Action” in Düsseldorf where she and many others helped to beautify our city. Her teacher, Ms. Herda, added, “I have been teaching Mona since 10th grade and have had the honour of accompanying her school career for three years. It is great to see how Mona has developed academically and also in character over the last few years. She is currently attending my IB German class and is preparing for her oral exam, where she has to give a presentation on a book extract. Mona is a very determined student whom I can always rely on when I have tricky questions about the protagonists. She is very motivating and enriches my class”.

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Pia

This week, we spotlight our fourth grader Pia, who joined ISR in grade 1. Pia is a talented young girl with a strong personality. Because of that, even teachers from middle and upper school know her very well! Mr. Urban met Pia as he covered a class from her and from that time, Pia has remained in his memory: “Pia is very confident and if you talk to her, sometimes you get the feeling of talking with a young adult. I enjoy the times we meet in the hallway, and she tells me about her weekend and holiday stories. She has a very lively personality, and I am sure she will go her own special way.”

Pia loves interacting with others and if she finds something interesting during class, she is passionate and enjoys sharing it with her classmates. She is very dedicated to the things she cares about and is always willing to help those struggling with tasks or questions. Her passion includes sports and she is an outstanding athlete. Jonna Schierl, Athletics Coordinator at ISR, says about Pia “last year, we did a small plank challenge in PE, and Pia was able to hold it far longer than everyone else. Her performance was really impressive, and she has a lot of potential.” Everyone who gets to know Pia will directly see the importance of sports in her life. She is a loyal friend and brightens the day of anyone she comes into contact with.

Our Music Teacher, Ms. Bucher, describes her finally with very appropriate words “The “P” in Pia stands for Personality! She has a great sense of humour and is very witty.”

Spotlight On Our Student Derin

This week, we spotlight our eleventh Grader Derin, who joined ISR in April, leaving behind his hometown Istanbul. Although Derin has only recently joined the ISR community, he has already impressed his teachers and classmates. He is a very friendly and open-minded student, who is particularly interested in discussion topics such as politics, current affairs and history. Also, he has volunteered as an election worker and will support the upcoming local elections in Düsseldorf.

His History teacher, Mr. Rademaker, confirms his interest in all historical subjects and adds “In History, Derin has impressed his teachers with his extensive knowledge of and passion for the subject. In addition, Derin is planning a fascinating topic for his Extended Essay and has already made extensive progress on his investigation.”

Derin is also very talented in reading; in Istanbul, he won on three occasions the German Reading Competition. Reading is his passion and that’s the reason why he also supports some second Graders during their preparations for reading competition. He is really committed to school life and recently joined the MUN Executive Team to help planning internal debates and finding virtual conferences to participate in. Derin also shines with his friendly and helpful personality. It is important for him to give something back and he is socially very committed. His CAS teacher, Mr. Urban, says about him, “Derin is a wonderful addition to our ISR Community. He is already very engaged in CAS and as a project, he will support the St. Augustinus “Memory Center” close at ISR. There he will use music, he plays Turkish guitar, to bring a smile to the faces of elderly people.”

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Kwaku

This week, we spotlight our second-grader Kwaku who joined ISR in Kindergarten. His former teacher, Ms. Stenning-Smith, describes Kwaku as a lovely and happy student. “Kwaku was a delight to have in my First Grade class last year. All of those who know him I am sure will agree that he has an incredibly friendly and welcoming face. One of his most favourite things to do was to make us laugh: he ensured each and every day that we had a good time whilst we were learning. His personality could be defined as bubbly and bright, there is never a dull moment when Kwaku is around.

“On top that all of he has a spectacular passion for learning. Kwaku deserves this week’s student spotlight as he is truly an all-rounded super star. He is truly missed in the First Grade corridor.”

Also his sports teacher, Mr. Johnstone, finds his personality fascinating and says about him “Kwaku is a wonderful student, and has an infectious positive personality. He is energetic, and simply loves to play sports. He is popular and well liked among his fellow classmates, and shows a kindness and helpfulness towards others, an excellent example of a great ISR student!”
