Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Julius

Spotlight On Our Student Julius

Julius, Grade 12, has been a student at ISR since Kindergarden and is a great example of what Staying Ahead looks like. He has not only achieved and maintained a top academic performance at ISR, but also through dedication, hard work, and determination has balanced a full-time soccer schedule with the professional soccer club Fortuna Düsseldorf as team captain of the U17 German Bundesligateam.

Now, we are very proud to officially congratulate Julius on his next career step: the enthusiastic and highly gifted soccer player has just signed a new contract for the U19 German Bundesliga with one of Germany‘s best professional soccer clubs, BVB Borussia Dortmund. Following graduation in spring he can fully focus on pursuing a professional soccer career. Congratulation Julius! In addition to his academic and sport pursuits, he is known around the ISR campus for being a kind and thoughtful student and a great friend.

We are proud to spotlight Julius, one of many of ISR’s outstanding students!

Our “Student Spotlight” project aims to highlight every Friday one of our outstanding students who is, appropriate to this year’s theme, “Staying Ahead”. No matter if academic achievements, special commitment, or outstanding character traits – we look forward to sharing each of these success stories.

Host Families Needed for Fortuna Talent Project

In cooperation with Fortuna Düsseldorf, ISR is launching an extraordinary new sport and football project. Through this new project, 20 football enthusiastic students (born in 2004) from the USA will get the chance to live in Germany for one year to improve their football skills.

The students are very ambitious and they of course have the hope of pursuing a career in the Bundesliga. They will go to school at ISR and train at Fortuna Düsseldorf and PSV Neuss.

The students will be led by the initiator of the project, Mark Dillon, a full-time coach of Fortuna Düsseldorf and from ISR, Karsten Baumann.

We are now looking for host families for the next school year (early August 2019 to end of June 2020), who are willing to host one of these students. We will support the families with a subsidy of 500 € per pupil per month. Liability for the students is covered by the Talent Project.

Information about the project can be found here;

pdfSoccertoday – The Talent Project

And of course, you can always contact Karsten Baumann (Karsten.Baumann@isr-school.de) or Malin Ljungqvist (malin.ljungqvist@isr-school.de) if you have any questions.

We are excited to implement this project with your help!

Dentist Dr. Jürgens Visits ISR Kindergarten

Earlier this week our favourite dentist Dr. Jürgens made her annual visit to our Kindergarten!  For over the years, Dr. Jürgens has visited ISR’s Kindergarten and has helped out students to develop good dental habits and to feel comfortable when visiting a dentist.

The children had lots of fun talking about their teeth and learning how to brush them correctly. Dr. Jürgens also had a look at each child and sent a small note home to the parents to let them know if further actions would be necessary. We thank Dr. Jürgens for her visit and hope to see her soon again!

ISR University Fair 2019

On Wednesday, we welcomed representatives of over 35 universities from 10 countries to our annual University Fair. In the foyer there was a real buzz, as students and parents from Grades 9 to 12 talked to the university visitors and learned more about courses and admissions processes.

Upstairs, there were presentations to give a more in-depth insight into studying in Scotland, the Netherlands, applying to Oxford and Cambridge, and the opportunities to study English-language medical, veterinary and dentistry degrees in Europe. The fair was a great success, and provided some additional motivation for Grade 11 as they continue work on their university applications. It also helped to inspire Grades 9 and 10 on their journey towards university.

University visit next week

A reminder that during break time on Thursday 4 April, 10 universities will be visiting ISR. These include Ecole Polytechnique, Sciences Po, EU Business School, IE University and Webster University. Representatives will be available to meet pupils from 11.00 – 11.25 outside the UCC office on the top floor of school. For more information, please contact the UCC team (ucc@isr-school.de).

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Luo

Spotlight On Our Student Luo

Our grade 8 student, Luo, has only been at ISR for a year but is already fully integrated. He is very active in our Student Life Organisation and is the designated movie maker for any school trip or school event. If you have been lucky to see his movies you know they are amazing, especially his drone recordings. Luo also excels academically and received multiple awards for his various accomplishments during the awards ceremony held two weeks ago.

What Luo loves most about being a student at ISR is the academic focus and seeing every student try their best. He also appreciates the various ways that ISR teachers structure their lessons to make them interesting and engaging for the students.

We are proud to spotlight Luo, one of many of ISR’s outstanding students!

Our “Student Spotlight” project aims to highlight every Friday one of our outstanding students who is, appropriate to this year’s theme, “Staying Ahead”. Russian Maslenitsa festival at ISR

Russian Maslenitsa festival at ISR

Friday, 22 March 2019

Last friday, we celebrated the traditional Russian Maslenitsa festival with our ISR community. We had such a good time learning about this festival, the origins behind it and being immersed in the cultural activities. Our Russian parents busied themselves by making homemade traditional food, drinks, and other symbolic arrangements.

The afternoon was filled with a lot activities and performances by our students, teachers, and parents. One of our Russian parents sewed the traditional dresses and the community wore traditional costumes and attire, which were worn by the teachers involved in the program. One of the days highlight was the bonfire! During which we burnt the Maslenitsa Doll which signifies new beginnings and to welcome in Spring!

We would like to thank all our students, teachers, and especially our parents who were involved in organizing and preparing for this event. It was a huge success and that’s all because of you!

International Kindergarten Düsseldorf_ISR Kindergarten

ISR International School on the Rhine to open a branch of its Kindergarten in Düsseldorf - Niederkassel

ISR International School on the Rhine to open a branch of its Kindergarten in Düsseldorf- Niederkassel

Friday, 22 March 2019

ISR International School on the Rhine based in Neuss is opening an English speaking Kindergarten in Düsseldorf-Niederkassel. The former ballet school of the Deutschen Oper am Rhein on Niederkasseler Kirchweg 36 has been torn down and will be replaced with a brand new Kindergarten by mid-2020, with a capacity for educating over 100 boys and girls aged three years and above. The educational philosophy and teaching methods practiced at ISR in Neuss will also be implemented at the site in Düsseldorf. The city council of Düsseldorf has approved of the plans for the new building, the legal change in the use of the property as well as the long-term lease of 50 years. ISR, with the support of the Düsseldorfer architect firm Leckelt, will now embark on building the planned premises.

Mr. Peter Soliman, CEO of ISR, places a high value on establishing an ISR branch in Düsseldorf, as many students, currently enrolled at ISR Neuss, live in Düsseldorf. Especially for students in Kindergarten, the interest from families from Düsseldorf has remained unabated. He says, “In the previous 4 years, we have already expanded our Kindergarten in Neuss twice. Currently, 139 children are enrolled in our Kindergarten. As we noticed a continuous rise in inquiries for Kindergarten spots, we decided against expanding our Kindergarten in Neuss for the third time and instead chose to open a new branch in Düsseldorf. Since there is an acute shortage of Kindergarten places in Düsseldorf, our opening also relieves some of the pressure on the state-run Kindergarten facilities. “

The location of the property in Düsseldorf is ideal. Both ISR Kindergartens are easily connected through the highways A52 and A57. The school expects some Düsseldorfer families currently enrolled in Neuss, to move to the new location in Düsseldorf. Mr. Peter Soliman remains confident that “due to the long waiting list at our current location in Neuss, we expect the vacant spots in Neuss to be filled immediately. “ Currently over 970 students are enrolled at ISR and are prepared for the IBDP (International Baccalaureate) school leaving certificate.

The open and green grounds of the former ballet school are perfect for the new Kindergarten building. The semi-circular building will enable each of the 5 Kindergarten classes to have direct access to the spacious playground. The modern building with generous rooms flooded with natural sunlight will be equipped with a kitchen, a Movement Room for dance, exercise and movement, and a parent conference room.

The international pre-school Kindergarten in Niederkassel is located directly next to the Japanese International School- JISD. Mr. Soliman confirms “We held a lot of preliminary talks with the school and the consulate regarding this project. We have discussed every planning stage jointly and our cooperation with JISD has been very friendly and open. We are certain that both parties will mutually benefit from this project.”

Essential aspects of the educational philosophy currently practiced at ISR in Neuss will also be implemented at the new location. For instance, English will be solely taught by native speakers. Mr. Soliman states “At this age, the children learn by playing” German lessons are also mandatory. Apart from the multi-lingual lessons, the ISR pre-schoolers also familiarise themselves with numbers and letters and are thus optimally and bilingually ready for primary school.

The caregiver to child ratio is low. A team consisting of one fully trained teacher and one/two teaching assistants is responsible for a group of up to 20 children. This enables very individual and comprehensive care for 3-6-year-olds. In total, around 16 employees (including the Head of the Kindergarten) will be managing the 5 Kindergarten groups in Düsseldorf. In addition, a German teacher and a Music teacher will also join the team.

To ensure optimal childcare support before and after teaching hours, the Kindergarten will be open from 07:30 am to 6:00 pm. Catering will be provided by the well-known company Broich which has a specialized nutrition plan focussing on the needs and wishes of the children.
