ISR meets with Turkish Consul General

Yesterday, our Turkish community, our School Director Ms. Lyons, ISR Proprieter Mr. Soliman and members of the ISR Management team, had the honor of meeting the new Turkish Consul General, Ms. Karaarslan, during a dinner. All attendees together with the Consul General and her husband discussed various interesting topics; primarily school-related themes.

ISR has always had a good relationship with the Turkish Consulate in the past, and we are pleased about the positive ongoing cooperation. Just recently, the consulate successfully supported us in our search for a qualified Turkish language teacher as we wanted to expand and enrich our SLO® program for our students.

We would like to thank the Consul General for her visit and her time and look forward to a fruitful cooperation between ISR and the Turkish Consulate.

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Rania

Spotlight On Our Student Rania

This week we would like to spotlight our first-grader Rania. Her teacher Ms. Stening-Smith says “Rania has a special place in our classroom. She can be described as a kind and caring girl. Rania is often seen helping her friends and fellow students, without any recognition or applause. She cares for each student in our class and has already managed to build a personal relationship which each of them. That’s one of the many reasons why Rania received the Kindness Award at our last Award Ceremony.

A few weeks ago, in Advising, Ms. Morris was teaching students about Empathy and said,: “I believe Rania is a great example of being an empathetic child. She shows her compassion towards not only her friends and students, but also to her teachers”. Her class teacher, Ms. Stening-Smith, says: “Rania is such a delight to have in first grade, when seen around school her smile contagious”.

We are proud to spotlight Rania, one of many of ISR’s outstanding students!

Our Student Spotlight project aims to highlight every Friday one of our outstanding students who is, appropriate to this year’s theme, striving for “extraordinary achievements” on a daily basis. No matter if its academic success, a special commitment, or outstanding character traits – we look forward to sharing each of these success stories.

Memory training for ISR students

Tuesday, we had the honor to welcome Dr. Ing. Boris Konrad (neuroscientist) to ISR. The eight times Team World Champion winner in memory held a lecture for our Upper School students about different memory techniques. He started with showing the students how he has learned to memorize the order of a deck of playing cards in less than two minutes. Dr. Konrad then showed the students how these tricks and methods can be learned and beneficial for anyone in their everyday life, for example when studying for an exam.

Dr. Konrad told the story of how he started training with different memory techniques when he was in high school and significantly improved his final grades. As he went on to university, he successfully studied both Physics and Applied Computer Science. In 2014, he received his Doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich on the neuronal foundations of exceptional memory performance and is currently working as a researcher at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in Nijmegen (Netherlands).

The maybe most important message to our students of the day, memory can be learned. With using the right technique anyone can have an exceptional memory. Our students really enjoyed this lecture and we as a school are grateful to have the opportunity to provide highly qualified guest speakers, such as Dr. Konrad, for our students. A huge thank you to Dr. Konrad for giving us insight into a very fascinating world that we will surely not forget.

Camp Read-A-Lot

Last Friday, for the first time, our Upper Primary team and the ISR Library hosted a literacy event called “Camp Read-A-Lot”. The goal of the event was to show students that reading is fun and motivate them to continue reading in the future.

Parents and students brought tents and tepees, sleeping bags, and flashlights so the whole camping experience would be as authentic as possible. Ms. Ghica opened the event by reading a book about camping, ‘A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee’ by Chris van Dusen. After that, parents and children retreated to their tents and started reading on their own. They had a selection of about 25,0000 different books in different languages from our library’s collection.

Outside the Library, there were activities for students like Comprehension Catchers, bookmark coloring, creative writing prompts, and Roll-A-Story cubes. At the end of the evening, children and parents were able to enjoy some hot chocolate, marshmallows, and cookies. It was a fun evening and all students enjoyed reading to their parents! We thank all participants, parents, teachers, and helpers for this great event and are already looking forward to the next Camp Read-A-Lot!

Spanish Study Trip – Barcelona!

This past weekend twenty-five grade seven and eight students, accompanied by Ms. Hautz, Ms. Racheva and Mr. Deyes travelled to Barcelona for our annual Spanish Study Trip! The students participated in a whirlwind of activities designed to expose them to the wonders of Spanish culture and give them as many opportunities to speak Spanish as possible.

They visited a wide array of beautiful and interesting places including la Pedrera, Casa Mila, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum, Pueblo Español, Park Güell, the Aquarium, took a cruise around the harbour and had a walking tour in the Gothic neighbourhood and Old Town! The trip was a great success that was enjoyed by all! We have already been asked where the destination is for next year.

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Anderson

Spotlight On Our Student Anderson

Anderson is one of our American exchange students from The Talentprojekt. As his mother is German, he already spoke some German before he came and has been helping his fellow exchange students to settle in. His coach, Mr. Baumann, says Anderson has a very professional athletic attitude and is a leader on the pitch, not to mention always the first one out there.

His teacher Ms. McGee says Anderson is a very hard working and intelligent student. In fact, ALL of his teachers have recommended him for the end of term recognition! Also, his host parents say Anderson integrated extremely fast and is enriching their whole family. In his spare time, Anderson enjoys cheering on his host brother playing soccer and takes time to watch TV with his younger host sister. Friends, teachers, or family – everyone agrees that Anderson is the kind of person you like to be around!

We are proud to spotlight Anderson, one of many of ISR’s outstanding students!

Our Student Spotlight project aims to highlight every Friday one of our outstanding students who is, appropriate to this year’s theme, striving for “extraordinary achievements” on a daily basis. DFB-Paule-Schnupperabzeichen at ISR

Around 80 students and 17 kindergarten children from ISR as well as some students from neighboring schools completed the DFB-Paule-Schnupperabzeichen at ISR last Friday. ISR, in cooperation with the DFB, has been organizing the Paule-Schnupperabzeichen for interested students from the region for four years now.

To receive this coveted certificate, students had to prove their football dexterity in the following three tests; dribbling, passing the ball and scoring. Parents could watch, cheer and support their children from the gallery of the sports hall.

All of the participants showed great skill and motivation during the test, and they all received their DFB certificates. Upon receiving the certificates, our proud soccer players had photos taken in front of the photo wall to memorialize their extraordinary achievement.

Many thanks to our football trainer and Head of Sports Department, Mr Karsten Baumann, our entire sports department and our cooperating partner PSV (Polizeisportverein Neuss 1961 e. V. ), who jointly managed the sports stations we had through out the sports hall. We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all participants once again on their successful training.

We are looking forward to the DFB-Paule-Schnupperabzeichen 2020!

Diwali Celebration in Düsseldorf

We were honored to be one of the sponsors of the annual Diwali Celebration of our partner and friends, the Deutsch-Indische Gesellschaft Düsseldorf (DIG) again this year. On Friday evening, 10 representatives from ISR along with Indian families from our ISR community joined in the colorful Diwali Celebration in Düsseldorf.

Diwali, which for some also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning “rows of lighted lamps”.

The evening was opened with a few welcome words by members of the association, the Mayor of Ratingen Mr. Pesch, Düsseldorf’s City Councilman Mr. Stieber, and ISR CEO and Proprietor Mr. Soliman. Afterwards a play was performed by talented child actors to better explain the history of Diwali. We are delighted that we were once again part of this wonderful celebration and we are looking forward to many more international celebrations with our community!

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Anna

Spotlight On Our Student Anna

This week we spotlight Anna from Grade 12, who has been at ISR since her Kindergarten days. Anna is currently preparing for her IB final exams and would like to study mechanical engineering in Aachen after graduating ISR. For Anna and her whole family, sport is an important part of their lives. Anna is passionate about carriage driving. Anna has won several tournaments and this summer she became the Show Champion with her horse Titus at the annual Rheinischen Championship for Carriage Drivers.

In order to be able to practice this sport regularly, Anna often works on her own carriage to make improvements and to prepare it after long tournament days. She chose to study mechanical engineering in order to better understand the construction of her carriage and to optimize it for future competitions. We are extremely impressed by Anna’s determination and are sure that she will bring home many more medals.

Another passion of Anna is photography. So for her CAS project, she decided to create calendars with her own photos and sell them. The proceeds will be donated to the charity organization “Education for all e. V.” which supports the Masaai School in Kenya. Anna traveled with her parents last summer to the Masaai Mara Natural Reserve and got to know the school first hand. Her family enjoyed safari rides, which allowed Anna to collect plenty of photographs for her calendar. Anna has consciously chosen the organization “Education for all e. V.” in order to provide the students with education and teaching materials.

With her sporting successes and her social commitment, she is a wonderful role model for her peers! We are proud to spotlight Anna, one of many of ISR’s outstanding students!

ISR at Neuss Cross-Country Run

ISR at Neuss Cross-Country Run

Monday, 11 November 2019

It was Race-Time again! Last Saturday, over 50 ISR students from our Kindergarten, Primary School, and Middle School participated in the Neuss School Cross Running competition at the ISR sports facility. Depending on their age, our students finished ran either a 400m, 600m or 1000m running course.

Everyone gave their best, showed a great performance, and enjoyed racing. It was nice to see all the muddy, but happy faces after the races. In two age groups, our ISR students even won the team rating and took a trophy home.

We are proud of all our runners and looking forward to our next race.
