Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student David

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student David

Friday, 13 November 2020

This week, we spotlight our eleventh grader David, who joined ISR in Kindergarten. Ms. Vrem-Ydstie, Head of the Kindergarten in Neuss, still remembers David well and describes him as a very committed student, “David was always very focused and he is now participating in the KG STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) project, sharing his interest in Science with ISR’s youngest minds. They enjoy his thoughtful presentations every week”.

Science is one of David’s greatest interests, which is why one of his IGCSE exams is Physics. After his graduation he is pursuing a career in Economics. His academic achievements are excellent and to that he is also highly engaged in school life at ISR. He is an active part of the MUN Executive Team as the Head of Logistics and regularly attends MUN conferences throughout the school year. He reads about and discusses current events. “His sense of humor, intelligence and empathy make him an outstanding student and delegate,” emphasizes his Academic Coordinator, Ms. McGee.

As part of his CAS project, David is also involved in ISR Student Life OrganizationⓇ and is currently running the Social Responsibilities Department which focuses on green initiatives and community service. He is organizing various actions like the “Tea Towel Donation” and the “Plastic Bottle Donation” to further strengthen environmental awareness at the ISR. His CAS teacher, Mr. Urban, adds, “I have known David since my first year at ISR and he was always a determined, reliable and friendly student, whom I appreciate very much!”.

We are very proud to spotlight David one of ISR’s many outstanding students!

Every Friday, our Student Spotlight Project aims to highlight one of our outstanding students who represent our school motto, “we enable great minds and strong characters”. No matter if it is academic success, special commitment or outstanding character traits – we look forward to sharing each of these success stories.

St. Martin at ISR

St. Martin

Wednesday, 11 November 2020

On November 11th we remember a story of mercy and charity with colorful lantern processions, songs and the stories about St. Martin. The story reflects important values to us and we are pleased that, despite the circumstances, at ISR we are able to share this beautiful tradition with our students today on a smaller scale – not least through the distribution of traditional Weckmänner, once again organized by our ISR Parent Network.

For G12 our Parent Network prepared a special surprise: each twelve grader received a wonderfully decorated mug containing a voucher that enables them to pick up a tasty hot chocolate at our in-house kiosk! In addition, our Kindergarten Team organized their own mini parade, acted out the story of St. Martin and all sang together. Thank you all for making this possible!

Also our ISR Kindergarten in Düsseldorf celebrated a colorful and fun-filled St. Martin today! We’re thankful to share this special tradition with our international kindergarten children and wish everyone a wonderful St. Martin!

We would like to thank everyone who helped to make this day unique and to introduce this beautiful tradition to our international school community.

ISR Virtual Charity Run

ISR Virtual Charity Run

Wednesday, 11 November 2020

An important part of the core value system and school life at ISR is that our students are socially engaged and involved in their communities. Even in the days of COVID-19, our students did not want to break with this important component and continue to support  and aid organizations of their choice. Therefore, our SLOⓇ Health & Sports Department came up with the idea to organize an ISR Charity Run despite COVID-19 – and do this virtually!

The virtual Charity Run will take place between 20th – 22nd November and is open for all students, parents, siblings, and staff at ISR to participate in. All donations will proceed to SOS Kinderdorf e.V., a renowned charity organization, which commits to enabling positive living conditions for disadvantaged young people and their families at 240 locations all across Germany. In times of Corona, they have set up a special program to support children and their families who have various needs during this time.

How can I participate?

This run will be a virtual charity run, in which everyone, who is willing to participate runs at home, either in their local park, neighbourhood, along the Rhine, or wherever you like.

If you would like to be part of the charity run, we kindly ask you to fill out the sign-up sheet until 19th November. The sheet lists several basic questions, such as name, grade, and the distance you wish to run.

SIGN-UP HERE

How can I support this good cause?

For every 100 meters, 10 cents will be donated to the charity organization. Individually, every person can specify the distance they want to run (or walk), and consequently donate the specific amount.

Example: If you decide to run 2 kilometres, you will donate 2 Euros and if you run 6.7 kilometres, you donate 6 euros and 70 cents. If you are willing to donate more than the minimum amount of 10 cents per 100 meters, there is a specific field on the sign-up sheet where you can add this information.

You can contribute your donation before or after you run, as we will be collecting the donations until Friday, 4th December.

Please bring your donation in exact change to the SLOⓇ office.

Fill out the sign-up sheet and help support the charity organization SOS Kinderdorf e.V.! The run offers a wonderful opportunity to be active and do something good at the same time.

We look forward to a many participations and thank you all for your support in advance!

Special Information for Grades:

Grades 1-4: the grade with the most participating students wins a movie session with popcorn

Grades 5-8: the grade with the most participants wins a movie session with popcorn as well

Grades 9-12: a recognition board will be displayed in school listing the students who ran the top 10 longest distances

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Tess

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Tess

Friday, 6 November 2020

This week, we spotlight our three-year-old Kindergarten student Tess, who joined ISR this year in August. Tess is a bright child and has adapted very quickly to life at ISR. From the beginning she has had a big smile on her face, is well-liked by her classmates, quickly found lots of friends, and is full of positivity.

Her teacher, Ms. Kim, describes Tess with the following words, “Tess has made the first weeks of this school year an absolute blast. Her contagious laughter and her kind personality are a great addition to our KG Starter family. There isn’t a day that the two of us don’t share heartfelt laughter.  I’m deeply impressed with her social skills. She talks to everyone, especially new students and children that struggle to make a friend. She can easily include others in her games and activities, which is not that simple for a three-year-old. Tess is eager to learn new things and I couldn’t be happier to have someone like her in my class.”

Tess is characterized by her versatile character and her abundant strengths. We are very curious to watch her development at ISR as she progresses to Primary School!

We are very proud to spotlight Tess one of ISR’s many outstanding students!

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Tom

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Tom

Friday, 30 October 2020

This week, we spotlight our sports-loving eleventh grader Tom, who has been part of the ISR community since last year. Tom moved to ISR from a German school and had to get used to a completely different school system in Grade 10. Last year he showed a lot of ambition and worked impressively through the change of school. His academic coordinator, Ms. McGee, still has fond memories of Tom’s start of school and confirms that he invested a lot of time, especially in the early months, to make the change of school a success.

As part of the CAS Big Brother/Big Sister project, Tom regularly spends time with a second grader and provides support. They meet during breaks and Tom takes on the role of Big Brother. Tom takes this role very seriously and it is important to him that he is a role model for his little brother. He is always available to answer his questions and give him advice. His CAS teacher, Mr. Urban, adds “with Tom, you immediately notice that it comes from the heart. Tom is very reliable and conscientious and an ideal role model for his little brother. The two laugh a lot and enjoy the time together.”

Another matter close to Tom’s heart is sport, as it is one of his greatest passions and he has been an active member of the sports club PSV, for many years. In order to combine his passion with school, he is currently taking the first IB sports course (Exercise and Health Service) at ISR. He also runs a SLOⓇ soccer activity for first and second graders together with our sports teacher, Mr. Johnson. Tom not only supports Mr. Johnson, but also brings his own ideas to the activity. He has great fun motivating the Primary School children and teaching them new techniques. Since Tom became part of the ISR community, he has been very involved and engaged from the beginning. He is appreciated by his classmates and is incredibly polite and reliable. Tom shows great fighting spirit and is an example of how you can achieve just about anything with a strong will and ambition.

We are very proud to spotlight Tom one of ISR’s many outstanding students!

Hybrid School Start at ISR

ISR Hybrid Education Model

Tuesday, 27 October 2020

The public debate about schools remaining open has flared up again, especially after the Fall Break in NRW. Due to the rising corona numbers in the region, hybrid classroom instruction at ISR began again on October 19. The hybrid model, already proven in March, ensures that distances can be better maintained at ISR and families can decide individually whether students attend classes from home or physically at ISR.

The hybrid education model is supported by mandatory masks, increased hygiene measures, a regular airing of rooms and temperature control upon entering ISR. Our staff members were also tested for corona virus on the first day back after the break to ensure the best possible protection for our ISR community.

ISR Halloween Spirit Day

ISR Halloween Spirit Day

Friday, 23 October 2020

Today we celebrated another exciting ISR Halloween Spirit Day and our students dressed up in their scariest costumes! Our wonderful SLO® department distributed sweets to our Primary and Middle School students in their homerooms and all students were very happy about this spooooooky surprise. Moreover, also a prize was given for the “best” and “scariest” Halloween costumes – what a fun!

From now until the 30th of October, our students will be also doing pumpkin carving and a door decoration contest. We are excited to see the outcomes!

ISR Autumn Art Camp

ISR Autumn Art Camp

Monday, 19 October 2020

Last week our ISR Autumn Art Camp was successfully held with a limited number of students. Bettina Schulenberg, a parent at ISR, prepared a week filled with creative ideas and lots of fun for our ISR students.

Each day, our students immersed themselves deeply in the art world and had the opportunity to try their hands at different art techniques. This included canvas painting, wood, and other objects, as well as carving pumpkins according to the season.

The daily program included having lunch together, which gave everyone an opportunity to share thoughts about the previous day, what they enjoyed working on and what they are excited to try to do.

The students also enjoyed a pleasant picnic in the schoolyard, where they ate sushi, fruit salad and freshly baked cookies together while listening to inspiring music. Ms. Schulenberg ensured that there was variety to the week, creative games were played and everyone had great fun.

The week ended with a fantastic exhibition of the students’ work. Together they proudly displayed their works. All the students that it was a refreshing week, and we hope for as much success at the next ISR Art Camp.

We would like to thank Mrs. Schulenberg for this exciting week!

ISR Sports & Fun Autumn Camp

ISR Sports & Fun Autumn Camp

Monday, 19 October 2020

During the Autumn Break, the ISR Sports & Fun Camp was successfully held for the first time with a limited number of ISR students. We look back on a week filled with a diverse sports program where fun was certainty had.

The camp was led by Mr. Mo and Mr. Jeff, who planned different sports activities for the students each day. These included tricky obstacle courses that tested the students’ sense of balance and dexterity. Their daily routine included having lunch together, during which the students were treated to delicious lunches by our in-house caterer Broich Catering.

The highlight of the week was the group visit to the trampoline park Jump Galaxy in Düsseldorf last Wednesday. Besides having fun jumping on the trampoline, the students enjoyed going up and down the many different climbing walls. The group had lunch there and afterward continued having a day full of fun. It was a very eventful week for our students! Thank you to our star staff Mr. Mo and Mr. Jeff for planning such an exciting week for the students!
