Former Federal President of Germany visits ISR

Former Federal President of Germany visits ISR

Yesterday, another special highlight in the history of ISR took place. The former Federal President of Germany, Mr. Christian Wulff, accompanied by the China expert Mr. Marcus Hernig, visited our school and gave a captivating lecture on the Chinese economy, the partnership between Germany and China, and the planned Silk Road.

More than 300 guests, including the mayor and the Landrat of Neuss, the mayor of Meerbusch, the Chinese Consul General and his Vice-Consul, the Turkish Consul General, and many more attended this special and high-profile event which was held in the ISR sports hall. After the exciting presentations, our guests were invited to ask the two speakers some questions to finish the stage program with an open dialogue. The event was rounded off later by a nice get-together in the end with finger food, drinks, and some fascinating conversations.

We would like to thank Mr. Wulff as well as Mr. Hernig for taking the time to visit ISR and for their fascinating presentations in front of our guests. We would also like to thank our co-organizers, the Deutsch Chinesische Gesellschaft Neuss as well as the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein, and our sponsors for their commitment and contribution to such a successful evening.

Carnival Prince and Princess of Neuss visit ISR

Carnival Prince and Princess of Neuss visit ISR

We always try to show our students new traditions from different cultures, which leads us to the beautiful tradition of Carnival. For several years now, the Carnival Prince and Princess of Neuss have visited us to bring the tradition of Carnival closer to the ISR community. Last Wednesday, our Talentproject students saw this first-hand as the Prince and Princess visited a friendly football match they played against VfR Krefeld-Fischeln B (Youth) Team and donated some footballs, which can now be used for training as well as by our students in the schoolyard!

We would like to thank the Carnival Prince and Princess of Neuss for their visit and look forward to maintaining a long lasting friendship with the Carnival Committee of Neuss!

New chef in the ISR kitchen!

Our caterers Broich Catering & Locations are starting the new year with exciting news! As of February, our school lunch is freshly cooked on site in the kitchen at ISR! Their chef Victor Kordis will move from Düsseldorf to Neuss to cook the food from scratch at school, each and every day.

With this Broich hope to be able to respond better to individual wishes and preferences of our students, and to become even more flexible. We welcome Mr. Kordis and his team to ISR and look forward to a tasty lunch!

Indian Harvest Fest at ISR

Indian Harvest Fest at ISR

Last Saturday, ISR, along with our Indian Community, celebrated the Indian folk festival “Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal”. Once again, the Harvest Festival at ISR was attended by hundreds of guests and friends of our school as we celebrated India’s cultural diversity. The German-Indian Society (DIG), a long-standing partner of ISR, was again a co-organizer of the festival and it was a special pleasure to welcome many members and friends of this society once again.

The festival was characterized by numerous stage performances by students, parents and the DIG community. There was also a “Fancy Dress Contest” centered around the theme of “Superheroes and Role Models” with great prizes for the kids! The highlight of the evening was a traditional campfire and accompanying drum music. At this point, everyone gathered around the fire to dance together into the summer night!

We would like to thank our Indian Community for sharing this colorful tradition with us and we are pleased that so many visitors, students, staff, friends of the school and partners of ISR were able to participate.

Penny Race for “Initiative Schmetterling Neuss e. V.”

Last Friday, Ms. Baumann from “Initiative Schmetterling Neuss e. V.” visited ISR to enable us to learn more about her organization and also get to know our school. She visited 1C who were the winners of the SLO® penny race held by our SLO® Social Responsibilities department, in which our school raised a total of 1,500 euros with 1C raising over 300 euros. She informed the children that the money they had raised would help families with children that suffer from life-threatening illnesses or are severely disabled.

We are proud of our students for donating money to such a good cause and that we have the chance to support people in need!

ISR Kindergarten welcomed the Year of the Rat!

ISR Kindergarten welcomed the Year of the Rat!

We had a morning full of music and joy as our Kindergarten celebrated the Chinese New Year and welcomed the Year of the Rat! The children held a small parade wearing their self-made dragonheads and masks whilst singing the traditional New Year song “Gong Xi Gong Xi.” Many of the children wore red, a Chinese symbol of luck, and traditional Chinese clothes. We are so grateful at ISR to be able to enjoy so many international celebrations and traditions with our students!

Sustainability at ISR - Our students take responsibility

Sustainability has always been a hot topic with a global impact and is gaining in importance from day-to-day. At ISR we have been trying to be more sustainable for some time, including various important projects ranging from Kindergarten to Upper School.

Examples of our drive for sustainability include the Bee Hotel in Kindergarten, the planting of new plant beds, our ecological SLOⓇ Club “Green Gods” that directly focuses on efficient ideas for improving sustainability in the ISR, our solar panels, and many others. We are very happy that we are now going in the right direction with a sustainable mindset.

Accordingly, together with a parent representative and our in-house catering company, Broich Catering & Locations we have decided to dispense with all disposable crockery and cutlery in the near future. We are counting on your cooperation here, as several procedures have to be changed and adjusted to ensure the implementation of this important initiative. This particular change will be put in place at our ISR International Spring Festival on April 25th (11:00 am – 03:00 pm) and we are looking forward to the significant impact it will have on our ISR environment.

ISR at the Chinese New Year Reception of the Consulate General

Last Monday, a reception took place to celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Steigenberger Parkhotel. Due to the excellent relationship that exists between the Chinese Consulate General, Mr. Feng, and our school, some ISR employees and members of the management team were also present at the event.

ISR is proud to be characterized by a large Chinese community that is constantly enriched with new families. The Chinese culture warmly contributes to the international nature of our student body and is celebrated at various festivals and events.

At ISR we plan to build upon this with, for example, a Chinese New Year celebration in February and a German-Chinese economic presentation with the former German President, Christian Wulff, and an expert on Chinese economics, Dr. Markus Hernig.

We look forward to further strengthening the good relationship and cooperation with the Chinese Consulate General and our Chinese community at school.

“DELF Scolaire” diploma ceremony at ISR

Yesterday, the “DELF Scolaire” diploma ceremony was held at ISR. In 2019, 26 students from our school obtained this French language certificate from level A1 to level B2. Also, for the first time at ISR, three Grade 12 students passed the very prestigious and challenging DELF B2, the highest level achievable for a foreign student before university, that also exempts its bearer from any linguistic test for entry to French universities.

Our students attended the ceremony in the study room of the ISR library, and as a reward for their fantastic performance were able to taste the famous “Galette des Rois”, a French traditional cake for Epiphany. Very well done, you all did a great job!

ISR Alumni Reception 2019

It is always a great pleasure to see again students coming from near and far at the annual ISR Alumni Reception that was held on Wednesday, December 18. Among them were students who since leaving ISR graduated from Cambridge and are currently working on their Ph.D., a student who currently studies at Wharton Business School (part of UPenn, an Ivy League university in the US), and also students studying in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, as well as other UK and US universities.

A panel of six ISR Alumni, representing Physics, English, Medicine, Law, Filmmaking, and Biochemistry, volunteered to answer questions from our Grades 9 &10 Coordinator Ms. McGee who hosted the event, as well as from our current Grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Topics ranged from ‘How well did ISR /IB prepare you for your studies?’ to ‘What is the best advice you could give to current students?’ to ‘Where are the best college parties?’ The event was rounded off with an informal get-together in the Cafeteria where finger food and drinks were served.

Thank you to everyone who attended, have a wonderful Holiday Break!
