Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Yasmin

Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Yasmin

Friday, 30 April 2021

This week, we spotlight our ninth Grader Yasmin, who joined ISR in 2018. Yasmin is a bright and ambitious young woman. She is very diligent in academics and already has the aim to study medicine after her IB. Yasmin is very active in school life and dedicates a huge amount of her time to leading the SLOⓇ Outreach Department. There she is doing a great job and motivates all of her deputies.

Her teacher, Ms. Brentnall, adds “Yasmin has made excellent academic progress this year through dedicated engagement with the feedback given to her. She helps to create an excellent learning environment with her pleasant manner and bright smile. It is a pleasure to teach a student who so positively engages with every topic and text type and so enthusiastically answers questions in class. Yasmin has developed a love for Shakespeare´s works and has delivered Juliet´s speeches with an accuracy of pronunciation, careful intonation, and enthusiasm – no easy feat, not even for a student with English as a native language and so I am particularly impressed by Yasmin´s performance. It is a pleasure to see Yasmin thriving in her interpersonal skills, confidence, and academic performance. Keep up the hard work, Yasmin!”

Yasmin’s ambition and her positive nature are reflected in what her teachers think and say about her. Her teacher, Mr. McGee, adds in conclusion “I am always impressed with her commitment to her schoolwork and her duties to SLOⓇ.  She does it all while maintaining a very positive attitude.  Recently, I saw her after her history midterm which she had finished quite early.  She explained, “it was easy.” A comment not about the quality of the IGCSE exam, but rather her own study habits and dedication to learning.  The remark displayed assured confidence in herself that she has earned through her hard work!”

We are very proud to spotlight Yasmin one of ISR’s many outstanding students!

ISR Mock Trial

ISR Mock Trial

Thursday, 29 April 2021

This week on Tuesday, our students Maria, Alex, and Jonathan from Grade 11 organized a mock trial for their Grade 11 peers.

A mock trial is a simulation of a lower-court criminal trial, where each student gets the chance to delve into a different role and experience what it is like to work in a courtroom. The roles range from attorneys, judges, and clerks to photographers and witnesses, so everyone can experience a unique role. Not only do students practice their ability to formulate arguments and hone their public speaking skills, but they also empathize by putting themselves into the position of others.

In this trial, a police officer, was accused of attempted murder of a high school student. Two teams of attorneys were responsible for defending or prosecuting the convicted and their cases were judged by a jury that ultimately decided he was guilty. Furthermore, to add to the authenticity of the trial, a clerk oversaw any exhibits provided by the attorneys as well as swearing all participants in. The bailiff on the other hand made sure everyone in the courtroom was well-behaved.

As this event was a major success and all the students enjoyed it, Maria plans on planning another trial on an even larger scale for all our upper school students. Another great chance to engage with others as well as to improve important communication skills!
