Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Lea
Spotlight On Our Student Lea
Lea, who has been at ISR since Grade 8, is now in Year 1 of her IB Diploma Programme studying Maths Analysis and Approaches, Computer Science and English Language and Literature at High Level. Ms. Macanovic, her English Teacher, says “It is a pleasure to teach Lea as her creative contributions liven up the classroom. It is not often that we as teachers see someone her age with such a passion for creative writing and critical thinking.” Lea is currently exploring possible university studies in Information Technology and Bio-Chemistry.
Lea has also been actively involved in ISR’s Student Life Organization.® Last academic year Lea served as the Deputy Head of Lower School, and this year is the Deputy Head of Outreach where she focuses her team on creating and spreading a positive atmosphere. She and her team are responsible for the wonderful spirit days each month and yummy bake sales. In December she successfully led her team to celebrate the Holidays with a candy cane sale, a bake sale and a Christmas/Holiday spirit day. Her hard work, passion and dedication tell us that she has a successful future ahead of her at ISR and beyond!
We are proud to spotlight Lea, one of ISR’s many outstanding students!

Penny Race for “Initiative Schmetterling Neuss e. V.”
- Tuesday, 28 January 2020
Last Friday, Ms. Baumann from “Initiative Schmetterling Neuss e. V.” visited ISR to enable us to learn more about her organization and also get to know our school. She visited 1C who were the winners of the SLO® penny race held by our SLO® Social Responsibilities department, in which our school raised a total of 1,500 euros with 1C raising over 300 euros. She informed the children that the money they had raised would help families with children that suffer from life-threatening illnesses or are severely disabled.
We are proud of our students for donating money to such a good cause and that we have the chance to support people in need!

ISR Kindergarten welcomed the Year of the Rat!
ISR Kindergarten welcomed the Year of the Rat!
- Monday, 27 January 2020
We had a morning full of music and joy as our Kindergarten celebrated the Chinese New Year and welcomed the Year of the Rat! The children held a small parade wearing their self-made dragonheads and masks whilst singing the traditional New Year song “Gong Xi Gong Xi.” Many of the children wore red, a Chinese symbol of luck, and traditional Chinese clothes. We are so grateful at ISR to be able to enjoy so many international celebrations and traditions with our students!
Sustainability at ISR - Our students take responsibility
Sustainability at ISR – Our students take responsibility
Monday, 27 January 2020
Sustainability has always been a hot topic with a global impact and is gaining in importance from day-to-day. At ISR we have been trying to be more sustainable for some time, including various important projects ranging from Kindergarten to Upper School.
Examples of our drive for sustainability include the Bee Hotel in Kindergarten, the planting of new plant beds, our ecological SLOⓇ Club “Green Gods” that directly focuses on efficient ideas for improving sustainability in the ISR, our solar panels, and many others. We are very happy that we are now going in the right direction with a sustainable mindset.
Accordingly, together with a parent representative and our in-house catering company, Broich Catering & Locations we have decided to dispense with all disposable crockery and cutlery in the near future. We are counting on your cooperation here, as several procedures have to be changed and adjusted to ensure the implementation of this important initiative. This particular change will be put in place at our ISR International Spring Festival on April 25th (11:00 am – 03:00 pm) and we are looking forward to the significant impact it will have on our ISR environment.
Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Yannick
Spotlight On Our Student Yannick
This week, we are proud to spotlight Yannick, a Grade 3 student. Yannick has been with ISR since Kindergarten and is definitely the “reading star” of our school. No wonder his favourite place is the Library! His teacher Ms. Schmidt says “Yannick always has an interesting book that he is busy reading and is happy to share his stories with his friends.”
She also says Yannick enjoys creating and drawing with the other students in class, “Yannick is a hard worker and always does his best. He is a very enthusiastic and much-loved member of Grade 3.” Also, his former teachers fondly remember him, “Yannick is a diligent student who always tries his very best and it was a pleasure to have him as a student. He is helpful, kind and an inspiration!” says his former Homeroom Teacher Ms. Carolus.
His teacher Ms. Duenas also remembers their time together in Kindergarten, “It was a joy to have Yannick for 2 years in Kindergarten. Yannick came in only speaking German but picked up English really quickly. We have so many lovely memories together, we still greet each other in passing and it’s great to see how much he’s learned throughout the years. It brings me joy to see that he loves reading. Keep reading Yannick!“
We are proud to spotlight Yannick, one of ISR’s many outstanding students!

Spotlight On Our Student Stella
Stella, a Grade 6 student, joined ISR last school year and has adapted very quickly to our school. She is a passionate and very talented horseback rider and speaks German, English and French fluently. Her teacher Ms. Adamczyk says, “Stella is a very polite and friendly student with a positive warm personality and a great attitude towards learning. Also, she is always willing to help others.”
Her current homeroom teacher can only confirm this, “Stella is a delight to have in the classroom. She is bubbly and always energetic. Her kindness with her friends is matched by her wit in her interactions with others” says Mr. Browning. Ms. Brand, the academic coordinator for Grade 6, adds that Stella is a very dedicated and conscientious student who strives hard to overcome challenges. “She is a fine example of how one can achieve great things through hard work and perseverance” says Ms. Brand.

ISR at the Chinese New Year Reception of the Consulate General
ISR at the Chinese New Year Reception of the Consulate General
Tuesday, 14 January 2020
Last Monday, a reception took place to celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Steigenberger Parkhotel. Due to the excellent relationship that exists between the Chinese Consulate General, Mr. Feng, and our school, some ISR employees and members of the management team were also present at the event.
ISR is proud to be characterized by a large Chinese community that is constantly enriched with new families. The Chinese culture warmly contributes to the international nature of our student body and is celebrated at various festivals and events.
At ISR we plan to build upon this with, for example, a Chinese New Year celebration in February and a German-Chinese economic presentation with the former German President, Christian Wulff, and an expert on Chinese economics, Dr. Markus Hernig.
We look forward to further strengthening the good relationship and cooperation with the Chinese Consulate General and our Chinese community at school.
Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Rafail
Spotlight On Our Student Rafail
This week, we spotlight our first-grader Rafail who has been at ISR since Kindergarten. “Rafail is a student full of energy and an amazing athlete, in particular a great soccer player, always positive and friendly and ready to take on the challenge of games against older players”, says his soccer coach Mr. Baumann.
His PE teacher Ms. Racheva heartily confirms this and adds that he is also a very intelligent boy who always puts the team first when playing, never gives up when the going gets tough and knows how to accept both winning and losing: not always easy at such young age. “Rafail is very polite, is always ready to help his teachers and classmates. He is a role model and a leader with a smile on his face at all times” says Ms. Racheva.
Also his former Kindergarten teacher fondly remembers him. “Rafail has always had a mighty spirit. As well as being a football genius, he’s always determined to do his best academically and also socially with his friends and classmates. I’m lucky to have had Rafail in my class. Don’t forget your Kindergarten teacher! :)” says Ms. Ramirez.
Additionally, his class teacher says: “Rafail is an incredibly kind and motivated student. He absolutely loves to learn and is always willing to go above and beyond to help others learn as well. He is extremely observant and is always there to lend a helping hand to those who need one. 1C is very lucky to have him!“

“DELF Scolaire” diploma ceremony at ISR
“DELF Scolaire” diploma ceremony at ISR
Thursday, 09 January 2020
Yesterday, the “DELF Scolaire” diploma ceremony was held at ISR. In 2019, 26 students from our school obtained this French language certificate from level A1 to level B2. Also, for the first time at ISR, three Grade 12 students passed the very prestigious and challenging DELF B2, the highest level achievable for a foreign student before university, that also exempts its bearer from any linguistic test for entry to French universities.
Our students attended the ceremony in the study room of the ISR library, and as a reward for their fantastic performance were able to taste the famous “Galette des Rois”, a French traditional cake for Epiphany. Very well done, you all did a great job!
