Spotlight On Our Student Henning
Henning, Grade 10, has been at ISR since Kindergarten. At the top of his class, Henning is a bright student and an enthusiastic learner, who is busy prepping for the upcoming IGSCE exams next week. Henning has also been very involved in ISR’s Student Life Organization®. Currently, Henning is the Deputy Head Prefect of the Outreach Department. In the past, he served as Deputy Head of Academics as well as a Senior Prefect in several other departments. And even more impressive, prior to spring break, Henning was named as the Head Prefect for upcoming Academic Year 2019-2020.
In addition to his involvement in ISR’s Student Life Organization®, Henning also supports the ISR Marketing Team with internal and external events – ”Henning is a great support! His helpful and outgoing personality and his willingness to always lend a helping hand, makes him a great asset at our various marketing events.” Wow! Way to go Henning! ISR is lucky to have such an impressive young leader in the making.

Spotlight On Our Student Carla
Our Grade 12 student Carla has been part of the ISR community since first grade. Carla is a very ambitious and helpful student who, as part of her CAS project, provides valuable support towards the development of the new ISR Alumni website. Together with a 12th grade classmate and the marketing team, Carla contributes ideas to make the website more useful and interesting for former ISR students. Their ultimate goal is to find innovative ways to attract ISR alumni to the website and increase their website participation as well as interaction with each other.
In addition, Carla is a prime example for tenacity and optimism. Only recently, Carla suffered a terrible riding accident and returned to school on crutches. Despite this setback, it did not stop her from working intensively on the ISR Art Exhibition. Her art teacher said: “Carla has a strong spirit. Nothing was going to stop her from putting together her Art Exhibition. She is always good-natured.”

Spotlight On Our Student Leo
Leo is an outstanding student, both in and out of the classroom. He is a bright and eager student who sets a great example for his classmates. Always willing to try out new ideas, Leo doesn’t shy away from hard work.
He loves to help others and is skilled at explaining new concepts to his fellow students. Not only does Leo loves reading and writing short stories, but he is also very passionate about sports, football in particular. He is very talented and always the first one on the field whenever there is an opportunity to play. Leo wishes to be just as good as his older brother Nico and he seems to be well on his way to accomplish this! Leo’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Carolus, says it’s a great pleasure to teach such an all-round talent.

Easter Egg Hunt in our Kindergarten
Easter Egg Hunt in our Kindergarten

What a day! Our Kindergarten started of this morning with an Easter Egg Hunt. The children had lots of fun hunting for eggs and enjoyed the wonderful spring weather. Later in the afternoon, their parents came in for the annual Kindergarten Spring Party. The children and their parents celebrated the beginning of Spring with food, songs and numerous fun activities like “Egg Race” and “Pin the Tail on the Bunny”.

On Monday some of our Turkish parents, accompanied by our Head of Upper School and IB Coordinator, Mr. Cete, had the honor of visiting the Turkish Consulate in Düsseldorf.
Mission. After the visit of the Turkish Consul General Mrs. Gürel at ISR in January, our parents received an invitation to visit the Consulate, which they accepted with great enthusiasm. They also met the Education Attaché Ms Özdoğan and continued previous conversations about our school and the Turkish community at ISR. Their goal is to maintain a continuous and open dialogue and to offer Turkish lessons at ISR soon.
We would like to sincerely thank the Turkish Consulate for the invitation and the wonderful morning. Special thanks to the Turkish Consul General Mrs. Grürel and Ms Özdoğan, who welcomed us warmly.

On Wednesday, the ISR Boys Football Team took part in the School Area Championship and earned fourth
place. The boys showed a great team performance in the group stage with 2 wins and 1 loss.
Unfortunately, we had to face an unlucky defeat in the semi-final by 0-1. After our team missed good chances
in the beginning, a goal was scored on a fast break. In the end, we lost the game for 3rd place with a score of
1-2. Congratulations to all the players, especially to Philipp Steinlein and Zile Lin for their extraordinary
performances.
Student Spotlights: Spotlight On Our Student Ruiying
Spotlight On Our Student Ruiying
Ruiying, Grade 7, started at ISR this school year and has already been a great addition to our school. She loves to play the piano and practices every single moment she has spare time. Even during the holidays, she spends most of her time playing.
Earlier this year, she achieved the first place in the regional music competition “Jugend musiziert”, playing the piano in a duet with her friend Sitong (saxophone), scoring 24 out of 25 points. This qualified her to the state-wide competition where she was second runner-up! Ruiying is also currently working on her own composition work with a group of students. Her music teacher already sees great potential for her future.
In addition, Ruiying is not only a wonderful musician but a great badminton player and a “delightful and a wonderful addition to the Badminton Team” to quote her coach Nikki Johnstone. She is also very involved in our Student Life Organization® and a great friend with a helping hand.

Fortuna Talent Project – Five Football Talents Came to Visit ISR

Five young football talents came to visit ISR with their parents and coaches today. They had a training session with Karsten Baumann at the Neuss district sports facility (PSV), met with representatives from upper secondary school and were given a school tour by one of our students.
We are excited about this new project together with Fortuna Düsseldorf and we look forward to welcoming 20 students this fall.

ISR’s Alumni Spotlight highlights the work of our amazing alumni, who now live all over the world and are accomplishing great things. Read what Jonas Bruns, Class of 2015, has been up to since graduation.
Give us an update on where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to since graduation.
Only a few days after graduation in 2015 I went on a flight to Iceland. Although I had a connecting flight from there a two weeks later, I had no flight back to Germany and it was only in January 2016 when I was hiking Larapinta Trail in the MacDonnell Ranges in Northern Territories, Australia, that I felt like going back home. In the meantime, I had been across Canada, the US, New Zealand, bits of Australia and set foot into Tijuana, Mexico for Tequila Expo. After an internship at Robert Bosch and two months in South East Asia I started studying mechanical engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and against all expectations I had not forgotten everything I learnt in school. It will be hard to believe that I was burning to study, especially maths (really!). Looking back, I wonder if I would have had the same passion and endurance for my studies I have today, if I went started uni straight after IB.
Tell us something about where you live and what you are currently doing?
I’m writing these lines in Hong Kong SAR, China while I am interning at BASF management consulting for three months. I moved here three weeks ago after having studied at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China for one semester and will be head home to Germany in April. The reason why is that on May 26th, 2019 I am running for office in the Elections to the European Parliament for the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
How has ISR prepared you for your future? What role did the school play in shaping your future?
Being able to communicate with people in another language is more than understanding what they are saying. It is the opener to a whole new world and culture. Speaking English is the number one asset that ISR equipped me with.
As you think about your own job now, the responsibilities you have, etc. are there skills and attitudes that you gained at ISR that are helping you now in the real world?
Before one of the first lectures in university, a Mexican introduced the Model United Nations Initiative Karlsruhe (MUNIKA). While barely anyone was paying attention, I was listening carefully because I knew what Model United Nations was* after I attended BALMUN with an ISR-Delegation. I soon became Board Member of the MUNIKA and in February and March I will be chairperson of a simulation of the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly in the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA. Its adventures like this made possible through having done MUN before.
If you could have your time at ISR again, is there anything you’d do differently?
I would’ve loved to push harder for more ISR participation and exchange with other high schools in Neuss. I still think it is a shame that we did not participate in the Abiparade like every other Neuss high school.
What is your favorite memory from your time at ISR?
The day of graduation when everyone was in Zeughaus hours before the thing started, we were asked to attend one (or numerous?) rehearsal(s). A friend and me sneaked out to Café Extrablatt for a beer. Before we went back, friends had texted us the Ms. Lyons was standing close to the main entrance and that we better take the back door which worked just fine. The picture of us we asked the bartender to take is still his Whatsapp profile picture.
It’s been almost four years since you graduated. Where do you see yourself four years from now?
That depends how you vote. If enough people vote FDP on May 26th, I will be member of the European Parliament.
Any tips for our recent/soon-to-be graduates or current students?
Do your thing. Don’t do what is expected from you because it is expected but find your own way. And there is one more thing I learned while hitchhiking and traveling: Say yes! When someone invites you home, they say it because they mean it. Say yes! If you are not sure if you might regret something or not, chances are high you are regretting nos more than yesses.
