Curriculum and Qualifications

One Pathway from Kindergarten to the IB Diploma

ISR is a continuous international school. From Kindergarten through Grade 8, the curriculum is aligned with Cambridge International. In Grades 9 and 10, students take Cambridge IGCSE courses, and in Grades 11 and 12 the IB Diploma Programme. ISR has been an authorized IB World School for the Diploma Programme since November 12, 2008 (IB school code 003698).

  • Grades 1–6: Cambridge Primary
  • Grades 7–8: Cambridge Lower Secondary, optional Checkpoint examinations in Grade 8
  • Grades 9–10: Cambridge IGCSE
  • Grades 11–12: IB Diploma Programme

Every ISR graduate receives two qualifications: the IB Diploma and the ISR High School Diploma, accredited by Cognia. With the subject combination required by the KMK, the IB Diploma is recognized in Germany as a general university entrance qualification (allgemeine Hochschulreife). ISR has been listed in Annex 1 of the KMK agreement since the May 2021 examinations.

ISR is recognized by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as an international supplementary school (anerkannte internationale Ergänzungsschule).

Language of Instruction and German

English as the Language of Instruction, German for Every Child

English is the language of instruction at every ISR school location. Every child learns German from Kindergarten, in two tracks: German for native speakers and German as a foreign language, aligned with the North Rhine-Westphalia public school curriculum. German is compulsory through Grade 10; in Grades 11 and 12 it depends on the student’s IB language pathway.

Children who are still learning English receive English as an Additional Language (EAL) support. A third language starts in Grade 6: French or Spanish, or Japanese or Chinese for native speakers.

Admissions and Mid-Year Entry

How Admissions Work

Families can apply all year, including for mid-year entry, when a place is available in the right grade. ISR decides each child’s grade individually, based on age, completed grades, school records, previous curriculum and English and German proficiency.

  1. Applicant’s Questionnaire: details about your child, previous schooling and the preferred start date.
  2. Visit or consultation: get to know the campus, the program and the Admissions Team – online if you prefer.
  3. School records: recent reports, transcripts and any learning-support reports.
  4. Knowledge check: an age-appropriate review of your child’s learning level, also online for families abroad.
  5. Offer of placement: after the school’s overall review.
  6. Enrollment contract.

Previous experience with Cambridge, IGCSE or the IB is not required.

Tuition Fees

How ISR Shares Fee Information

ISR does not publish a general fee table. Fees depend on the campus, grade, program, start date and academic year, and ISR provides them individually after the Applicant’s Questionnaire. Kindergarten fees in Düsseldorf and Meerbusch differ from those in Neuss, and a sibling discount applies according to the fee schedule.

Full-day care from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM is included in tuition at the school locations. When comparing schools, also consider registration fees, lunch, the school bus and optional activities. Fee figures on third-party websites are not binding ISR information.
