What Is the Extended Essay in the IB Diploma Programme?

ISR International School on the Rhine ·

The Extended Essay (EE) is an independently written academic research paper of up to 4,000 words that is part of the required core of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). Students choose their own research question, conduct research independently, and write a structured academic paper based on it. Together with Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay can contribute up to three additional points to the overall IB Diploma score.

Together with TOK and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), the Extended Essay forms the so-called DP Core. It is designed in particular to foster skills that are important later at university: research, academic writing, critical analysis, argumentation, source evaluation, and independent work. The IB explicitly describes the Extended Essay as practical preparation for academic work at university.

For families looking for an IB Diploma in Düsseldorf or near Düsseldorf, the Extended Essay is therefore an important factor when evaluating an IB school. What matters is not only whether the school offers the IB Diploma Programme but also how students are supported during the research and writing process.

Is the Extended Essay Mandatory in the IB Diploma?

Yes. For students who complete the full IB Diploma Programme, the Extended Essay is a mandatory part of the program.

The DP Core consists of three components:

  • Extended Essay (EE)
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

The Extended Essay and TOK are assessed and together can contribute up to three additional points to the overall IB Diploma score. This means the Extended Essay is not simply an extra term paper. It is a central component of the IB Diploma and affects whether students successfully complete the program.

How Long and Demanding Is the Extended Essay?

The Extended Essay is limited to 4,000 words, making it one of the most demanding individual pieces of work in the IB Diploma Programme. The entire process from choosing a topic to submission usually extends over about one year and requires an estimated 40 hours of independent work.

These 40 hours include research, reading primary and secondary sources, planning, several drafts, and the final revision. On top of that come regular supervision meetings with the assigned supervisor. The word count may seem manageable, but the real effort lies in the depth of the analysis and the quality of the argumentation.

In the process, students learn to formulate a clear research question, critically evaluate sources, and write a coherent academic text. The Extended Essay is not a school essay but a genuine piece of academic work at the introductory level of university study.

Which Subjects and Topics Are Allowed for the Extended Essay?

For the Extended Essay, students choose a topic from an IB Diploma Programme subject area that is available for the respective examination session. Under the new Extended Essay model, there are basically two routes: a subject-focused Extended Essay and an interdisciplinary Extended Essay.

What Is a Subject-Focused Extended Essay?

In a subject-focused Extended Essay, the research question is investigated from the perspective of a single DP subject. Examples could include:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • History
  • Economics
  • Psychology
  • Literature
  • Languages

What Is an Interdisciplinary Extended Essay?

In an interdisciplinary Extended Essay, a research question is investigated from the perspective of two DP subjects. This interdisciplinary approach is more firmly established in the new Extended Essay model.

The former World Studies Extended Essay has been integrated into this more flexible interdisciplinary approach as of the first examination session in May 2027.

How Is the Extended Essay Assessed?

The Extended Essay is assessed against five current criteria. The first four criteria relate to the essay itself, while criterion E relates to the reflection in the Reflection and Progress Form (RPF).

Criterion Points What is assessed
A: Framework for the essay 6 Whether the research question, research method, and structure form a suitable framework for the investigation
B: Knowledge and understanding 6 How thoroughly the student understands the subject area being investigated and uses subject-specific concepts
C: Analysis and line of argument 6 The analysis and the quality of the argument throughout
D: Discussion and evaluation 8 Among other things, how the results are discussed and how critically students evaluate their own investigation
E: Reflection 4 How the student reflects on the learning experience during the Extended Essay

What Is the Role of the Supervisor in the Extended Essay?

The supervisor accompanies the student throughout the Extended Essay process. This is not about writing the essay for the student or correcting it extensively. Rather, the supervisor helps with orientation, gives feedback on the research process, and helps develop the direction of the research by asking questions.

The IB requires three mandatory reflection sessions between the student and the supervisor. The third session takes place after the essay has been completed and is called the viva voce. Supervision is therefore an important part of the entire research process.

What Should Parents Ask IB Schools About Extended Essay Support?

For parents comparing IB schools in or around Düsseldorf, we would therefore recommend asking not only about IB results but also:

  • How are supervisors selected?
  • How is the appropriate subject area assigned?
  • How is the Extended Essay timeline organized?
  • What support is available for research and academic writing?
  • How are academic integrity and correct citation taught?
  • How are the mandatory reflection sessions prepared?

These questions give parents a much clearer picture of the actual quality of IB support.

How Many Points Does the Extended Essay Contribute to the IB Diploma?

The Extended Essay is considered together with Theory of Knowledge for the DP Core. Together, TOK and the Extended Essay can yield up to three additional points for the IB Diploma.

However, this does not mean that a very good Extended Essay automatically generates three bonus points. What matters is the combination of the respective results in TOK and the Extended Essay.

What Common Mistakes Should You Avoid in the Extended Essay?

The most common difficulties don’t arise only during writing; they start at the planning stage.

  • A research question that is too broad: The bigger the topic, the harder it becomes to carry out a truly in-depth analysis within 4,000 words.
  • Description instead of analysis: Summarizing information is not enough. The Extended Essay requires a clear, well-reasoned analysis and argument.
  • Unsuitable sources: The quality of the sources must match the research question and the subject area. General internet sources alone are usually not sufficient for a demanding academic investigation.
  • Research question and method don’t match: The chosen method must actually be suitable for answering the research question.
  • Lack of critical evaluation: A good Extended Essay considers not only results but also the limitations, weaknesses, and validity of the student’s own investigation.
  • Insufficient time planning: Those who start research, writing, and revision too late lose valuable time, especially for analysis and critical reflection.
  • Underestimating academic integrity: Sources must be documented correctly, and other people’s ideas must be clearly identified. This also applies when using digital tools.

How Does the Extended Essay Prepare Students for University?

The Extended Essay was also explicitly designed as preparation for academic work at universities. Among other things, students practice how to:

  • Independently develop a research question
  • Identify suitable sources
  • Critically evaluate information
  • Build arguments in a structured way
  • Write academically
  • Reflect on their own methodology
  • Organize a long-term project independently

What Does Research Say About the Extended Essay and University Success?

Studies on the Extended Essay suggest that former IB students find the research skills they acquired helpful for their university studies. In a study at the University of Virginia, for example, former IB students reported more often than the comparison group that they were well prepared for research-related coursework. Another study in Canada showed that many former IB students rated the skills acquired through the Extended Essay as helpful for the academic demands of their first year at university.
