The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an internationally recognized educational program that prepares upper school students for universities worldwide. It was developed to provide a comprehensive, well-rounded education that not only imparts subject knowledge, but also fosters critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and personal development. The IB Diploma Programme is completed in grades 11 and 12 and concludes with internationally recognized examinations.

At ISR International School on the Rhine in Neuss, near Düsseldorf, Germany, students complete the IB Diploma Programme after the Cambridge IGCSE years. The sections below explain how the IB works and who it suits.

How Is the International Baccalaureate Structured?

The International Baccalaureate is an educational program that was founded in 1968 and is now offered at more than 5,000 schools worldwide. The IB Diploma Programme lasts two years and is aimed at students in grades 11 and 12. It comprises six subject groups, from each of which students choose one subject. Three of these subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL) with 240 teaching hours and three at Standard Level (SL) with 150 teaching hours.

In addition to the six subjects, there are three core elements that make the program special:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A course that encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and make connections between different subjects.
  • Extended Essay (EE): An independent research paper of about 4,000 words on a topic of the student’s choice.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): A program that encourages students to engage in creative pursuits, physical activity, and community service outside the classroom.

How Many Points Can You Earn in the IB?

The maximum score in the IB is 45 points. At least 24 points are required for the diploma. The global average is around 30.6 points.

What Are the Differences Between the IB Diploma and the Abitur?

The IB Diploma and the Abitur are both recognized university entrance qualifications, but they take different approaches. While the Abitur is strongly geared toward the German education system, the IB was developed specifically for an international educational community. This makes it particularly attractive for families who value a global perspective or are planning for their child to attend university abroad.

What Are the Advantages of the IB Diploma?

Concrete advantages of the IB Diploma:

  • International recognition: The IB is recognized by leading universities in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and worldwide.
  • Broad range of subjects: Students study subjects from six different areas, which ensures a well-rounded education.
  • Multilingualism: The IB requires the study of at least two languages, which strengthens language skills and intercultural understanding.
  • Research and thinking skills: Through the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, students develop skills that prepare them directly for university study.
  • Holistic development: CAS activities foster social engagement and personal growth beyond the classroom.

Studies show that IB graduates often achieve better grades at university than students without an IB background. The skills acquired in the IB in time management, problem solving, and independent research pay off directly at university.

How Does the IB Diploma Programme Work?

The IB Diploma Programme spans two years in grades 11 and 12. Students choose one subject from each of the five required groups: language and literature, foreign language, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics. From the sixth group, they can choose either an arts subject or another subject from groups 1 to 5.

The exams take place at the end of the second year in May. Higher Level exams are more demanding and longer than Standard Level exams. Exams can be taken in English, German, French, or Spanish.

Assessment is made up of external examinations and internal assessments. Internal assessments include projects, oral exams, and lab reports, which are graded by the school and externally moderated. This gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in different ways, not just in written exams.

Which Students Is the IB Suitable For?

The IB is particularly well suited to students who are looking for a challenge, are curious, and enjoy thinking independently. It is aimed at motivated learners who are willing to engage intensively with a variety of subjects and to be active outside the classroom as well.

The IB is also a very good choice for:

  • Students who are aiming to study abroad
  • Families with an international background or who are internationally mobile
  • Young people who are interested in several subjects and do not yet want to commit to a single focus
  • Students who value social engagement and creative projects alongside academic achievement

The program is demanding, but it is not purely an elite program. More important than exceptional grades are a positive attitude toward learning, perseverance, and a willingness to take responsibility for one’s own education. Students who bring these qualities will thrive in the IB.

At Which Universities Is the IB Diploma Recognized?

The IB Diploma is recognized by universities all over the world. Renowned institutions such as the London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL), the University of Edinburgh, New York University (NYU), Erasmus University Rotterdam, Maastricht University, and Waseda University in Japan accept the IB as a university entrance qualification.

Is the IB Diploma Recognized at German Universities?

The IB Diploma is also recognized for study at German universities, provided certain requirements are met. The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (KMK) has set clear criteria for this:

  • A successfully completed IB Diploma is mandatory.
  • Three of the six subjects must be taken at Higher Level.
  • At least one Higher Level subject must be mathematics, a natural science, or a language.
  • Two languages must be studied.
  • On average, at least a 4 must be achieved in each of the six subjects, which corresponds to a minimum score of 24.

In addition, ISR has introduced an additional module in vector calculus for the IB Mathematics Standard Level course. This module gives ISR graduates access to technical degree programs at German universities, such as mathematics, engineering, and the natural sciences.

How Does ISR Prepare Students for the IB?

At ISR International School on the Rhine, preparation for the IB does not begin in grade 11. Our entire curriculum is designed to equip students from the very beginning with the skills they need for the IB: critical thinking, independent research, time management, and strong communication skills.

In grades 9 and 10, we specifically prepare our students for the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams, which form an important foundation for entering the IB Diploma Programme. The results speak for themselves: 60% of our students achieve an A or A* in the IGCSE, and 85% of grade 10 achieve at least a B.

What IB Results Do ISR Students Achieve?

In the IB itself, we have achieved impressive results in recent years:

  • Our graduates achieve an average of 36 points, well above the global average of 30.6 points.
  • Our pass rate is 100%.
  • 70% of our graduates exceeded the global IB average.
  • Half of the graduating class earned the demanding bilingual IB Diploma.

Three full-time University and Career Counselors guide our students on their way to university, help them choose the right IB subjects, and support them with applications worldwide. In recent years, almost all students who were aiming to study in Germany were able to meet the requirements. If you would like to learn more about how we prepare your children for the IB and beyond, we warmly invite you to visit our campus and get to know our community in person.

How Does ISR International School on the Rhine Support Students With the IB Diploma?

The path to the IB Diploma raises many questions, from subject selection and preparation to university applications. In the IB Diploma Programme at ISR, we support students and their families along this path with a well-designed program and genuine personal support.

  • Structured IB preparation from grade 9: Through the Cambridge IGCSE program, our students gradually build the skills they need to successfully enter the IB Diploma Programme.
  • Above-average results: A school average of 36 IB points and a 100% pass rate show that our support works.
  • Access to German and international universities: Our additional module in vector calculus also gives ISR graduates access to technical degree programs at German universities.
  • Individual academic counseling: Three full-time University and Career Counselors provide support with subject selection, academic planning, and applications worldwide.
  • Bilingual IB Diploma: Half of our graduating classes earn the bilingual diploma, a strong signal to international universities.

If you would like to get a concrete picture of how the IB program comes to life at our school, we look forward to meeting you and your family in person. Feel free to attend one of the ISR Info Days and experience our school and community firsthand.
