At an international school, students can earn internationally recognized diplomas such as the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) at the end of grade 10 and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in grades 11 and 12. Many schools also issue their own High School Diploma. The IB Diploma opens doors to universities around the world and, if the KMK requirements are met, also counts as the German general university entrance qualification.
The range of diplomas is broader than most parents expect. Here we explain step by step what exactly is behind these qualifications and which one is right for your child.
Which Diplomas Are Available at an International School – and How Do They Differ?
The range of international school qualifications is broader than at a regular German school. Depending on the school and grade level, different qualifications are available. The most common are:
- The Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education): A British-style school qualification taken at the end of grade 10.
- The IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme): A two-year program in grades 11 and 12 that is considered an internationally recognized university entrance qualification.
- The school’s own High School Diploma: A graduation certificate issued by the individual school that documents the courses successfully completed in grades 9 to 12.
Many international schools combine these qualifications. For example, students can take the IGCSE in grade 10 and then pursue the IB Diploma. This gives them a solid academic foundation and maximum flexibility when choosing what to study.
What Is Behind the Cambridge IGCSE?
The Cambridge IGCSE is one of the best-known secondary school exams in the world. It is developed by Cambridge International Examinations and offered at almost 1,500 schools in more than 120 countries. Students usually take the exams in eight to fifteen subjects, and grades range from A* (the top grade) to G.
British universities in particular look very closely at IGCSE results when making offers of admission. But American and other international universities also value these external exams as reliable proof of achievement. The IGCSE is therefore a strong signal to universities worldwide: Your child can deliver under real exam conditions.
Is the Cambridge IGCSE Worthwhile for My Child?
The IGCSE is suitable for all students who want to lay an academically demanding and internationally recognized foundation for the rest of their school career. The IGCSE exams also help students sharpen their subject choices for the upper grades, as they show where a student’s strengths lie.
Under certain conditions, the German Sekundarabschluss I (Mittlere Reife) can also be obtained through the IGCSE. The Düsseldorf District Government is the right point of contact for more information on this.
What Is the IB Diploma, and How Does It Differ From the Abitur?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma is a two-year program of study for students in grades 11 and 12. It was developed to prepare motivated young people for study at universities worldwide while also fostering international understanding.
Unlike the German Abitur, the IB Diploma does not consist of subject exams alone. Anyone who wants to earn the diploma must:
- Take exams in six subjects (three at Higher Level, three at Standard Level)
- Take part in the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) program
- Write an Extended Essay (EE), an academic research paper
- Successfully complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, which fosters critical thinking about knowledge and epistemology
The maximum score is 45 points; at least 24 points are required for the diploma. What sets the IB Diploma apart from the Abitur above all is its breadth and international focus: It fosters not only subject knowledge but also analytical thinking, self-organization, and a global perspective.
Many top-ranked universities around the world, including the London School of Economics, University College London, and New York University, recognize the IB Diploma as an admission qualification.
Which Diploma Opens the Most Doors for University Study?
That depends on where your child wants to study. As a general guide:
- IB Diploma: Recognized by universities worldwide and, in Germany, counts as the general university entrance qualification (Allgemeine Hochschulreife) if certain requirements are met. This makes it the most comprehensive qualification for choosing a university internationally.
- Cambridge IGCSE: Particularly valuable as preparation for the IB Diploma and as evidence for British and international universities. It is not a university entrance qualification in itself, but it is an important building block.
- ISR High School Diploma: The High School Diploma of ISR International School on the Rhine documents the student’s complete school career and is taken into account by many American and international universities during the application process.
If you want to keep as many options open as possible, the IB Diploma is your best choice. It is recognized in more than 160 countries and provides access both to German universities and to universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Asia, and many other regions. In short: It is the most flexible qualification an international school can offer.
How Does an International School Prepare Students for These Diplomas?
A good international school does not start preparing students shortly before the exams, but lays the foundation for them in the early grades. The Cambridge curriculum forms a common thread that runs from elementary school all the way to the upper grades.
In practice, it looks like this: In grades 9 and 10, students are systematically prepared for the IGCSE exams. In the upper grades, i.e., grades 11 and 12, the focus then shifts to the IB Diploma. Regular progress checks help identify learning gaps early and close them in a targeted way before they develop into bigger problems.
Another important component is individual university and career counseling. Three full-time University and Career Counselors help students choose the right courses, write personal statements, and apply successfully to universities around the world. This does not start in the final year, but gradually from middle school onward.
Can You Also Obtain the German University Entrance Qualification at an International School?
Yes, that is possible – through the IB Diploma. The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (KMK) has defined clear criteria under which the IB Diploma is recognized as the general university entrance qualification in Germany. These include:
- A successfully completed IB Diploma
- At least three subjects at Higher Level
- Two languages (at least one at Higher Level, or a Language A plus a Language B at Higher Level)
- At least one Higher Level subject from mathematics, the sciences, or a language
- An average of at least 4 points per subject (i.e., at least 24 points in total)
The path to the German general university entrance qualification through an international school is clearly regulated and well within reach for many students, provided course selection is planned strategically from the start.
What Applies to Technical Degree Programs in Germany?
For students aiming for technical degree programs such as engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences, there is an important addition. Students who take math at Standard Level can meet the requirements for technical degree programs at German universities by completing an additional module in vector calculus. Students who take math at Higher Level do not need this module.
