We are pleased to announce that our students continue to receive offers from outstanding universities throughout Europe. British universities always reply first, so most of these are from the UK, even though many of our students have applied to a variety of countries. Perhaps the most noteworthy information is that one of our students has now received offers to study Mathematics at Imperial College, London, University of Warwick, and last—but not least—University of Cambridge.
Mr. Rafe Courage, the British Consul-General for North Rhine-Westphalia, visited our school today. After a student-guided school tour, he addressed the students’ questions about his professional career and the challenges of his job. His interest in foreign countries and languages motivated him to study European Business Studies and embark on a diplomatic career. He especially appreciates the versatility of his work; getting to meet and know interesting people and visit many different countries. Mr Courage also highlighted the importance of an academic education. His tip for life: “Be round people.”
On Friday 19th January, 20 ISR students received their DELF Scolaire Diplomas, for language levels A1, A2, B1. The diplomas were handed out by the General Consul of France in Düsseldorf, Mr. Muller. Present for the ceremony was Mr. Schreiweis, from the French Institute of Düsseldorf - who is in charge of the development of the French language in Nordrhein-Westfalen. The consul applauded the students on their hard work and excellent results. The ceremony ended with a French traditional cake, the famous “galette des Rois”!
It is always an amazing feeling to enjoy the fruits of one’s endeavours. This week, the Spanish Department has definitely done so! In a very cosy and personalised ceremony that took place in the library on Wednesday, we handed out the DELE certificates to our Grade 11 students.
DELE are official certificates that are issued by The Instituto Cervantes in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The knowledge that our students have acquired and these certificates that they have received are evidence of the hard work they put in. This accomplishment will open doors for them to work or study in well-known international companies and universities in Spanish speaking countries in the near future.
Last Saturday, a number of visitors came to ISR and celebrated the Indian Harvest Festival Lohri – also called Pongal or Makar Sankranti in different regions of the subcontinent. The stalls were decorated with beautiful Indian handmade crafts, textiles and jewellery. The visitors also enjoyed a vast array of delicious food. The program on stage included Indian folksongs, violin and keyboard performances as well as classic Bollywood dances, which made the audience feel like they were home for a few moments.
Over 30 alumni gathered at ISR just before Christmas for our annual Alumni meet-up. Our graduates now study all over the world, for instance in England, Spain, the USA, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany and are studying subjects such as mechanical engineering, biochemistry, medicine, business administration or pharmacology.
The gifts donated by the parent community as part of the Wishgarland campaign were presented to many happy children last Tuesday and Thursday. The children from the Weckhoven Family Center delighted us with a well-rehearsed performance after a small Christmas party. The bright eyes of the children clearly showed how much they enjoyed receiving the lovingly wrapped gifts.
