English Program

The goal of the English Department at ISR is to ensure students have the skills to enter the IB program in grades 11 and 12 or AP in grade 12 and then go on to successfully complete university. Because our students enter ISR with various levels of proficiency, we offer a wide range of classes to meet those needs and reach our goals.

Grades 1–8

Students in grades 1 through 8 study the SABIS® English program. When appropriate and necessary, however, intensive English classes are offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels to prepare students with low proficiency to make the transition into the regular, native speaker English program.

Grade 9

Students in grade 9 study an enhanced SABIS® English program which includes additional reading of original English language fiction. When appropriate and necessary, intensive and transitional English classes prepare students for this more demanding curriculum.

Depending on their level of proficiency, students may enter regular language or literature courses. These courses share a curriculum, but language offers more basic guidance in the English language itself, while literature offers more literary analysis. All students in grades 7 through 9 are introduced to oral production and assessment.

Grade 10

Students in grade 10 enter pre-IB language or literature, where IB models of reading, writing, and oral presentation define the curriculum and assessments. IGCSE preparation is also part of grade 10 curriculum with exams taking place in May.

Grades 11–12

Students in grades 11 and 12 choose among three IB courses:

  • Literature, for students with high proficiency and who will study the social sciences or humanities in university;
  • Language and literature, for students with high or middle-range proficiency and who will study math or science-based subjects in university;
  • English B, for students with lower proficiency.

Regardless which English course students choose, they will be well prepared to study at any competitive English-language university in the world.
